A Local Port

I took a bunch of pictures of the local fishing port on the outskirts of the old-town... I imagine things would have looked much the same hundreds of years ago when the island of Zanzibar was a sultanate occupied and operated by people who came down the East coast of Africa from Arabia in Dhows... Before the Europeans arrived and slave trading became popular here :(

Everything is loaded and unloaded by hand.... The most sophisticated machinery around (concessions to the modern era) are small outbourds on the boats to assist manoeuvering and bicycles for the locals to move themselves and  small amounts of cargo around the place.
