Well, it seems that Im about a month late in this part of the world.
... That would be the month that I spent going to "Burning Man" just before setting off South on this trip and then refiting the bike and pfaffing around in Van'... Oh well :)
First there was the flooding in the Cusco area that stopped me getting to MachPichu, and now it seems that the Sal de Uyuni is sodden too.
The Sal de Uyuni is a vast salt flat high up on the altiplano here in Bolivia. It is so big you cant see one side from another and on a fine day out in the middle, you just have a blue sky and white land... You really lose perspective. Its a pretty standard place to go on an overland tour by motorbike. You get to ride as fast as you possibly can in any direction... see how fast your bike goes, or see how long you can ride with your eyes closed etc.
But, not for me it seems...
The rains have been heavy here too and the salt flat is currently a combination of salt lake and mud flat... I really dont fancy getting bogged out there in the middle of a "salt hell" with literally hundreds of Km to walk out, and no likelihood of rescue! And if I cant do that bit then there would seem to be little point in riding the hundreds of Km of rough dirt road to cross over to Chile from Uyuni too.
So, Im changing my plan again, and Im gonna back-track toward LaPaz and take the paved road back to the coast and cross over to Chile at Arica... Ill go South as planned and then when I come back North, Ill do the salt flat thing then.
A couple of months should dry things out and I was already sort of planning to come this way to see MachuPichu anyway :))
