This mountain is the symbol of Argentina and is included in their coat of arms and I believe that the boarder of Chile and Argentina goes over the peak.
It was named after the captain of HMS Beagle (of 1835 Charles Darwin fame) and though it is not big at 3400m, it is extremely difficult to climb.
Climbing wise, it was first ascended in the early fifties by the famous French Alpinist, Lionel Terray. He was also one of the French team that was the first ever to ascend one of the Himalayan 8000m peaks (Anapurna in 1950?), though he was not on the summit team... Which accounts for him being able to climb technical rock after that expedition because the two summiteers lost many digits to frostbite... The leader (Maurice Herzog) lost all fingers and toes and the other guy (Gaston Rabuffat) lost all his toes!!!
Anyway, its a really spectacular piece of rock and while not that technical (graded at 5.8, A2 I think?), the climate down here and the required good weather "window" make it extremely difficult to climb... I dont know anyone who has even tried it!
But it was a nice half day hike to the lake at the base of it which is more or less base camp... and it looks nice in pictures :)
