All the way up through South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana, Ive been staying at camp sites... Ive only spent a couple of nights while in the larger towns in Hostels.
And the rest camps (as they are called) are usually pretty good value for money. They cost between about US$8 and US$12 per night and they pretty much all have nice camp sites with BBQ/camp-fire facilities, Well appointed ablution facilities and communal kitchen/washing facilities and they pretty much all have swimming pools.
Really quite comfortable...
But, there is a bit of an odd trend among them... especially the ones located far out in the country/desert areas... They ALL seem to have gone in for the "rustic" atmosphere and are cultivating it enthusiastically.
But I think they may have mistaken the word "rustic" for the simpler concept of "Rusty"!
It seems that their main decore feature is to collect as much old rusty metalwork of any description whatsoever and scatter it liberally throughout the camp-site.
They seem to try to concentrate the ferrous detritus in the high value areas where the visitors spend most of their time... In the bar and restaurant areas and around the reception and pool areas.
The higher end establishments seem to do a bit more of a stylish job and they seem to concentrate on old farm equipment (horse drawn ploughs and hey rakes) and old cars (from the 30s/40s) and I have to say that they look pretty good. But the lower end establishments will take anything rusty as "cultural value" and and to my eye at least often start to resemble a junk yard rather than a camp site :)
But at the end of the day, the sites are all still pretty nice places for me to stay and Im having no difficulty finding somewhere to camp even if I get to a town after dark... Im happy with them :)
